- Pay in cash on a Metrobus and you pay the full fare every time you board — the free transfers only exist for EASY Card and EASY Ticket riders.
- The discount fare is not a category you claim at the gate. It is loaded onto a discount-fare EASY Card you apply for once, with proof.
Getting through the gate
Three steps, and the first one is the only one that catches people out: you buy before the gates, not after.
Get an EASY Card
From the vending machines in any station lobby, a Transit sales outlet or online. A paper EASY Ticket is fine for a couple of trips; the plastic card is what you want if you will ride all week.
Load value or a pass
Add pay-as-you-go dollars, or load a 1-Day, 7-Day or 1-Month pass. The machines take cards and cash and are inside the paid-area entrance, before the gates.
Tap at the gate
Hold the card flat on the reader until the gate opens. Coming from a Metrobus, tap the same card and the transfer is free — two different taps are charged as two fares.
How to pay
Six ways in, and the choice matters more than it looks. Miami-Dade publishes the free bus-to-rail transfer for the EASY Card and the EASY Ticket; a contactless bank card gets you through the gate just as fast, and the daily cap instead.
EASY Card
A reusable, tap-to-ride plastic card. Load it with pay-as-you-go value or a pass at any station vending machine, at a Transit sales outlet or online. Free transfers only work when you tap the same EASY Card across bus and rail.
EASY Ticket
A paper equivalent for occasional trips or visitors — buy it from the same station machines and load one or more rides onto it. The ticket itself is free, where the plastic card costs $2 — so it is the cheaper way in for a short stay.
Contactless
Tap a contactless bank card, phone or smartwatch straight on the gate reader. No card to buy — the standard $2.25 fare is charged to your bank.
GO Miami-Dade Transit app
Buy and store fares on your phone and show or tap them at the gate. The app also gives live arrivals and the official trip planner.
Other apps that sell the pass
Miami-Dade also sells the One-Trip, One-Day and Seven-Day passes through Token Transit, Transit, Moovit and Google Wallet/Maps on Android. Those three products only — everything else goes through an EASY Card or the county app.
Cash — but not at the gate
The Metrorail fare gates do not take cash. The ticket machines in the station lobby do, and that is where you turn notes into an EASY Card or EASY Ticket. Cash paid to a bus driver buys one ride with no free transfer.
The most a day can cost you
Miami-Dade caps what it takes off one card in a single day, so a visitor who rides five times is charged for two and a bit. Nothing to buy and nothing to claim — it happens on its own, as long as every tap is on the same card.

Keep tapping the same contactless card, phone or stored-value EASY Card and the day stops charging you once it reaches the price of a 1-Day Pass. Ride three times or ride nine — a day never costs more than $5.65 on Metrorail and Metrobus. Metromover is free regardless.
One tap, not two
No tap out
Metrorail charges a flat fare, so there is nothing to calculate when you leave: you tap once to get in and walk straight out at the other end. Do not look for a reader on the way out — there isn't one, and the gates open from the inside.
Passes, and who rides free
A pass beats tapping if you ride enough, but read the small print: none of the three lasts the round number of days its name suggests. And several Miami-Dade programmes let residents ride for nothing at all.
Passes, and how long each one lasts
- 1-Day — $5.65 ($2.80 discount). Runs from your first tap until 2:00 am the next day, not for 24 hours and not to midnight.
- 7-Day — $29.25 ($14.60 discount). Seven consecutive days from the first day of use.
- 1-Month — $112.50 ($56.25 discount). A calendar month, so buying one on the 28th buys you three days. Miami-Dade does not sell it at all between the 11th and the 20th.
- All three cover Metrorail, Metrobus and Metromover, and load onto an EASY Card or EASY Ticket.
If you are here for a couple of days, you may not need a pass at all: the daily cap already stops you paying more than the price of one.
Who rides free, and who rides at half price
- Golden Passport — seniors 65 and over and Social Security beneficiaries ride free. This is what a Miami-Dade senior uses; the $1.10 discount card is for 65+ visitors from outside the county.
- Patriot Passport — veterans who are permanent Miami-Dade residents with an annual income of $38,686 or less ride free.
- Mobility EASY Card — residents on a low income ride free; the Commuter-Reduced Fare card halves the fare a little higher up the scale.
- Discount fare, $1.10 — Medicare recipients, most riders with disabilities and K-12 students.
Miami-Dade publishes two different income thresholds for the Mobility and Commuter cards — under $20,385 and under $35,910 for the first — on two of its own pages, so ask before you apply: 786-469-5151.
Free transfers
Moving between Metrobus and Metrorail costs nothing extra, in either direction — you are only ever charged one fare for the whole journey. What the operator attaches that free transfer to is the card: it is published for the EASY Card and the EASY Ticket, and anyone paying a Metrobus driver in cash pays the full fare again at every boarding. Between two buses the transfer holds for three hours from first use, and it will not pay for a round trip back the way you came. Miami-Dade does not publish a transfer rule for contactless bank cards; what it does publish is the daily cap, which stops a contactless day at $5.65 however many times you tap. Metromover, the downtown people mover, is free to everyone with no card at all.
